Ontario Families Can Renovate Their Homes and Save Money Through the Green Ontario Fund Rebate Program

In an effort to support Ontario families make small and big changes in their homes to help save money while reducing their carbon footprint through home upgrades, the Province has launched the Green Ontario Fund.  Ontario homeowners to take advantage of these programs and rebates to make the home renovations they need to improve their homes comfort, energy-efficiency, and to do their part in helping to fight climate change.

According to the government, this new agency will oversee programs and rebates for homes and businesses to reduce energy costs.

GreenON Rebates makes upgrading your home easy.  The new GreenON Rebates will cover:

  • Up to $7,200 off new insulation and a $100 rebate for air sealing
  • Up to $20,000 to install ENERGY STAR certified ground source heat pumps (home geothermal) or up to $4,500 to repair existing heat pump systems
  • Up to $5,800 off air source heat pumps that are ENERGY STAR certified or meet program requirements
  • Up to $5,000 for replacement windows that meet program requirements

Windows are an important element in passive solar home design, which uses solar energy at the site to provide heating, cooling, and lighting for a house.  Replacing your old windows with ENERGYSTAR qualified windows are one of the leading ways to lower energy use and save you money.  

If you’ve been considering replacing your home windows for quite some time, this rebate program might just be what you need to get take the next steps.  Here’s how it works:  The first step is to find a participating contractor to purchase and install your insulation or windows.  In terms of the rebate program, your contractor will submit your rebate application on your behalf.  Once you have validated that the work has been installed, you will submit your proof of purchase and you will receive your rebate cheque in the mail from the Green Ontario Fund in approximately 8-12 weeks.

If you don’t see your preferred contractor on the list of participating contractors, check back to see more contractors in your area, bear in mind that new contractors are signing up every day.  Alternatively, you can contact your preferred contractor and ask about their participation in the program.

Did you know that a well-insulated home keeps the temperature of any room? Furthermore, it supports Ontario’s initiative to  reduce heating and cooling costs and shrink your home’s carbon footprint.

Get Up to $20,000 to Install Home Geothermal

Heat and cool your home while reducing your carbon emissions. Ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs), also known as home geothermal, use the underground temperature of the earth to draw heat to warm your home more efficiently, which can reduce heating costs by up to 50 per cent. In the summer, it reverses the cycle to keep your home cool and comfortable.

If you’re home already has a heat pump and you’re looking to update yours, you can still  receive up to $4,500 to replace or repair your ground-source heat pump. However, your systems must be at least 20 years old.

Get up to $5,800 to Install Air-Source Heat Pumps

Use the outside air to heat and cool your home while reducing your carbon footprint. Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) use heat exchangers to draw heat from the outside air to bring it indoors, keeping your home warm more efficiently. In the summer it reverses the cycle to keep you cool.

Smart Thermostat $100 Rebate for Ontario Homes

Smart thermostats, like the Nest provide smart energy management in your home.  No more manual programming, smart thermostats learn from you and can be controlled anywhere from your smartphone or tablet.  When you buy one of five eligible smart thermostat models for your home, you can receive a $100 rebate from the Green Ontario Fund, plus save on energy! Also under this program, Ontario residents can register to have their smart thermostat installed at no cost.

When all is said and done, the question is, will all these efforts actually save consumers money?  Some have their speculations about the program however, the government of Ontario is predicting an average of 15% savings on energy bills per year.  Nonetheless, Canadian have always been conscious about climate change and the environmental effects of over-consumption.  Families across Ontario can now do their part with a little more of a financial ease through the Green Ontario Fund program.
